Curry House Coco Ichibanya (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo)

As some of you know, I've been blessed with another opportunity to visit Japan!  This time, it's not with a tour group, and so the four traveling women are roaming the streets of Tokyo on our own.  Traveling was a bit of a feat - as we were met with a flight delay and unready hotel rooms - and it was only about 7pm that we headed out to go find some grub.

We were originally going to visit Tengu Izakaya, but since the bar/drinking hub was filled with cigarette smoke and drunk men, we decided to go for the good ol' curry house.  We did also scout out the cheap discounted food in department stores (go at about 7:30pm when they close at 8pm), but decided to sit down somewhere and eat.

Coco Ichibanya is a humble corner shop in the midst of the endless hubub in the main Shibuya-ku.  This place is quite tiny inside, but the sign is hard to miss!  Immediately upon walking in, we could feel the warmth of the heater (winter is quite cold in Japan) and were quickly seated by a friendly waitress who gave us menus - in English too!  Japanese curry houses are simple, and don't usually serve any side salads, etc. with their meal like American or Taiwanese places do.

Their ordering scheme is very simple - choose your main (chicken, pork/tonkatsu, cuttlefish, etc.), how much rice you want (more or less), and how spicy you'd like the curry to be.  I ordered a Pork Cutlet Curry (700Yen) with Regular Spice, while Emily got the Spice Level 2, which is already quite spicy.  Mine was just right for me - a little spicy, but not overpowering, and easily devoured without any pain.  Amongst us, we also had the Tomato (Curry?), which was a bit salty, and the Vegetable Beef Curry, which was good, but only comes in Normal Spice.  We all got less rice, and were quite full already - so smaller eaters may want to consider this option.

I enjoyed the place - even though it's kind of considered fast food - and the rice is definitely not fast food grade anywhere else in the world!  Definitely a recommend, especially for those watching the wallet.
