Poppy Cakes (Brisbane CBD)

For some strange reason, I've been craving Red Velvet cupcakes, even though I'm not a big cake fan.  Maybe it's because I saw Sprinkles post up their famous Red Velvet cupcakes for the Hurricane Sandy relief, or maybe I just have a sweet tooth, but either way, I spotted the Poppy Cakes pop-up shop on Adelaide a few weeks back and have been wanting to try it.

We got back from lunch in the Valley at about 3pm, so most of the flavors like Salted Caramel and Lemon and Poppyseed were gone, but they still had Peanut Butter and Red Velvet, so we ended up getting those.  I didn't mind cause I'd been craving Red Velvet in particular anyway.  The cupcakes were a little dry for my taste, and neither the cake part nor the frosting were representative of Red Velvet.  I could barely taste the cream cheese, as the frosting was really grainy and sugary, rather than creamy and smooth, and the cake didn't taste quite chocolatey enough.  Maybe the Peanut Butter or other flavors are better, but at $4 a pop, I'm not too eager to give it another try anytime soon.  This may be the bees knees to some, but for me, the sugar balance between the frosting and cake were exactly reversed, and the cake portion a little too dry.  Sadly, the cupcake fell short of my expectations, especially with all the hype and good reviews of the store on 1000 Ann St., but oh well, maybe I was hoping for too much with  my craving for Sprinkles.
PS- oops! some of my pictures were taken while i was walking so they're really blurry.
